Water Trapped For 1.5 Billion Years Could Hold Ancient Life
May 16, 2013
From: http://www.npr.org

Scientists have discovered water that has been trapped in rock for more than a billion years. The water might contain microbes that evolved independently from the surface world, and it's a finding that gives new hope to the search for life on other planets.

The water samples came from holes drilled by gold miners near the small town of Timmins, Ontario, about 350 miles north of Toronto. Deep in the Canadian bedrock, miners drill holes and collect samples. Sometimes they hit pay dirt; sometimes they hit water, which seeps out from tiny crevices in the rock. Read more

Newfound Comet Likely Won't Hit Mars Next Year
April 15, 2013
From: http://www.space.com

A comet that had a slim chance of crashing into Mars in 2014 will almost certainly fly harmlessly past the Red Planet, scientists say. While the odds of a Mars comet strike are now exceedingly remote, the new information also suggests that Siding Spring will fly closer to the planet than originally expected. Read more

"The Science Behind UFOs" - Stanton Friedman Lambastes Astronomy Magazine
April 11, 2013
From: http://www.theufochronicles.com

As a scientist who has been studying the UFO evidence since 1958, I must commend ASTRONOMY for publishing such a splendid example of the intellectual bankruptcy of the pseudoscience of anti-ufology, namely Phil Plait's "The Science Behind UFOs" (May 2013). He avoids all the science! There are 5 large scale scientific studies. None are mentioned. There are at least 12 PhD Theses about UFOs. None are mentioned. There are numerous radar visual accounts. None are mentioned. There are more than 5000 Physical Trace Cases collected by Ted Phillips from 95 countries. None are mentioned. There are a number of well investigated UFO abduction cases investigated by Professionals such as Psychiatrist Dr. John Mack of Harvard. None are mentioned. Read more

Nazca Lines Damaged
April 7, 2013
From: http://twocrowsparanormal.blogspot.com

Peruvian news daily, El Comercio, has reported damage to a group of lines on the Nazaca plateau. According to the daily, heavy machinery owned by a firm removing limestone from the area is responsible for the damage. The company claims that the plant is on private property and that the owners have a right to carry out their operations.

Eduardo Herran Gomez de la Torre, director of research at Ojos de Condor says the damage in the area is extensive: "We have witnessed the irreparable destruction to a set of lines and trapezoids that existed in the area." Read more

Administration Confirms NASA Plan: Grab An Asteroid, Then Focus On Mars
April 6, 2013
From: http://cosmiclog.nbcnews.com

NASA's accelerated vision for exploration calls for moving a near-Earth asteroid even nearer to Earth, sending out astronauts to bring back samples within a decade, and then shifting the focus to Mars, a senior Obama administration official told NBC News.

The official said the mission would "accomplish the president's challenge of sending humans to visit an asteroid by 2025 in a more cost-effective and potentially quicker time frame than under other scenarios." The official spoke on condition of anonymity because there was no authorization to discuss the plan publicly. Read more

Scientists Develop Fusion Rocket Technology In Lab - And Aim For Mars
April 5, 2013
From: http://cosmiclog.nbcnews.com

Researchers at the University of Washington say they've built all the pieces for a fusion-powered rocket system that could get a crew to Mars in 30 days. Now they just have to put the pieces together and see if they work.

"If we can pull off a fusion demonstration in a year, with hundreds of thousands of dollars ... there might be a better, cheaper, faster path to using fusion in other applications," John Slough, a research assistant professor of aeronautics and astronautics, told NBC News. Read more

NASA Spacecraft Snaps New Photo of Potential 'Comet of the Century'
March 30, 2013
From: http://news.yahoo.com

A NASA spacecraft scanning for the most powerful explosions in the universe has captured a photo of Comet ISON, an icy wanderer that could potentially dazzle stargazers when it swings close to the sun later this year.

NASA's Swift satellite, which is typically used to track intense gamma-ray bursts from distant stars, photographed Comet ISON on Jan. 30, with the space agency unveiling the photo. By tracking the comet over the last two months, Swift has allowed astronomers to learn new details about how large the comet is and how fast it is spewing out gas and dust.

On Oct. 1, the comet will pass within 6.7 million miles (10.8 million km) of Mars, and may be spotted by orbiters around the Red Planet. "During this close encounter, Comet ISON may be observable to NASA and ESA spacecraft now working at Mars," said Michael Kelley, a UMCP astronomer and also a Swift and CIOC team member. "Personally, I'm hoping we'll see a dramatic postcard image taken by NASA's latest Mars explorer, the Curiosity rover." Read more

UFO Memo Is FBI's 'Most Wanted' Record
March 27, 2013
From: http://www.livescience.com

The FBI says its most viewed public record is a memo from 1950 recounting a strange story someone told an agent about three "flying saucers" that were allegedly recovered in New Mexico.

The so-called Hottel memo was first released in the late 1970s under the Freedom of Information Act, but it's been viewed nearly a million times since 2011, when the FBI launched an online databaseof public records called the Vault. Read more

Astronomers Gearing Up For Possible 'Comet Of The Century'
March 18, 2013
From: http://www.space.com

Astronomers are already getting set for the arrival of Comet ISON, which may become one of the brightest comets ever seen when it cruises through the inner solar system this fall.

NASA has brought together a small team of experts to organize an observing campaign for Comet ISON, which could potentially shine as brightly as the moon when it makes its closest pass by the sun in late November if the most optimistic scenarios play out. Read more
