Finding Life Beyond Earth is Within Reach
July 14, 2014
From: http://www.nasa.gov

Experts from NASA and its partner institutions addressed this question on July 14, at a public talk held at NASA Headquarters in Washington. They outlined NASA's roadmap to the search for life in the universe, an ongoing journey that involves a number of current and future telescopes.

The NASA roadmap will continue with the launch of the Transiting Exoplanet Surveying Satellite (TESS) in 2017, the James Webb Space Telescope (Webb Telescope) in 2018, and perhaps the proposed Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope - Astrophysics Focused Telescope Assets (WFIRST-AFTA) early in the next decade. These upcoming telescopes will find and characterize a host of new exoplanets -- those planets that orbit other stars -- expanding our knowledge of their atmospheres and diversity. Read more

Earth's Magnetic Field Flip Could Happen Sooner Than Expected
July 9, 2014
From: http://www.scientificamerican.com

Earth's magnetic field, which protects the planet from huge blasts of deadly solar radiation, has been weakening over the past six months, according to data collected by a European Space Agency (ESA) satellite array called Swarm.

The biggest weak spots in the magnetic field -- which extends 370,000 miles (600,000 kilometers) above the planet's surface -- have sprung up over the Western Hemisphere, while the field has strengthened over areas like the southern Indian Ocean, according to the magnetometers onboard the Swarm satellites -- three separate satellites floating in tandem. New Look At Apollo Rocks Finds Evidence Of Moon's Birth
June 6, 2014
From: http://www.npr.org

A new analysis of rocks collected by Apollo astronauts on the moon more than 40 years ago bolsters the leading theory of our natural satellite's origin – that it formed from a collision between a nascent Earth and another object some 4.5 billion years ago.

The theory, first suggested by William Hartmann and Donald Davis in 1975, goes like this: the early solar system was a lot like a demolition derby, with big chunks of rocky material careening through space and frequently colliding with one another. One of those wayward objects, a planet-sized chunk of material scientists call Theia, slammed into young Earth, nearly splitting our world in two. The resulting wreckage was captured by Earth's gravity and coalesced into the moon. Read more

New Dwarf Planet Found At The Solar System's Outer Limits
March 26, 2014
From: http://www.npr.org

Scientists have spotted a new dwarf planet at the edge of our solar system. It's a kind of pink ice ball that's way out there, far beyond Pluto. Astronomers used to think this region of space was a no man's land. But the new findings suggest that it holds many small worlds — and there are even hints of an unseen planet bigger than Earth.

"We used to think there's just not much out there. But it turns out there are some interesting things," says Chad Trujillo, an astronomer at the Gemini Observatory, a big telescope on a mountaintop in Chile. Until now, the only object detected in that part of our solar system was a dwarf planet called Sedna, after an Inuit goddess said to live in the frigid Arctic Ocean. That discovery was made a decade ago, and since then scientists have wondered: Is Sedna alone? Read more

Ufologist Dr. Roger Leir Has Died
March 16, 2014
From: http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com

The researcher and author was best known for his work investigating alleged extraterrestrial implants. A well known figure in the UFO community, Leir's work gained worldwide attention thanks to his investigations in to the phenomenon of alien implants and his alleged removal of several such objects from the bodies of abductees.

These 'devices' appeared to exhibit anomalous isotropic ratios and chemical compositions comparable to those found in meteorite samples, leading Leir to conclude that they may be extraterrestrial in origin. Several prestigious laboratories have examined these objects over the years however the results remain both controversial and inconclusive. Read more

Scientists: Mammoth Cloning 'Now Possible'
March 15, 2014
From: http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com

Experts believe that they have enough samples from preserved mammoth remains to clone a live specimen. Efforts to bring the species back to life have been progressing in leaps and bounds thanks to the discovery of an extremely well-preserved mammoth in Siberia's Yakutia province last year. The specimen exhibited a level of preservation practically unheard of in paleontological finds and still contained viable soft tissue and bone marrow. Read more

Shostak: 'We Will Find ET Within 20 Years'
March 14, 2014
From: http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com

SETI's Seth Shostak believes that if alien life exists then we will find it within the next two decades. The senior astronomer believes that advances in computing technology will make it possible to significantly speed up our ability to scan star systems for signs of intelligent extraterrestrial civilizations.

"The thing to keep in mind is that we're still in the very early days when it comes to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence," he said. "Saying there's a silence is a bit like if Columbus, looking to discover a new continent, only sailed 10 miles off the coast of Spain before turning back to say, 'Nothing out there!' I guess that whole exploration gig isn't going to work out." Read more

Newly Found Megalithic Ruins In Russia Contain The Largest Blocks Of Stone Ever Discovered
March 11, 2014
From: http://www.minds.com

An incredible discovery that was recently made in Russia threatens to shatter conventional theories about the history of the planet. On Mount Shoria in southern Siberia, researchers have found an absolutely massive wall of granite stones. Some of these gigantic granite stones are estimated to weigh more than 3,000 tons, and as you will see below, many of them were cut "with flat surfaces, right angles, and sharp corners". Nothing of this magnitude has ever been discovered before. The largest stone found at the megalithic ruins at Baalbek, Lebanon is less than 1,500 tons. So how in the world did someone cut 3,000 ton granite stones with extreme precision, transport them up the side of a mountain and stack them 40 meters high? According to the commonly accepted version of history, it would be impossible for ancient humans with very limited technology to accomplish such a thing. Could it be possible that there is much more to the history of this planet than we are being taught? Read more
